Big Oak Wooden Plate
A large engraved oak plate whose grain and cracks were promoted from defects to design department.
THE SURFACE / OAK + ENGRAVING
The cracks were invited.
The oak blank came with deep grain, uneven edges and several cracks. Hiding all of that would have required turning the plate into a different piece of wood, so the damage stayed and became part of the composition. A broad engraving of game birds, grapes and ornamental foliage fills the centre without covering the material underneath. Four related engraving designs survive in the source repository. One finished photograph survives here. It is enough to prove the plate exists, although not enough to claim a complete build diary or decide whether anyone was brave enough to serve dinner on it.
